Thank you for reading the newsletter! 😊
December is upon us
December .... the month when we see festive touches light up houses and balconies, parks and public spaces. The month when we get together with our families and friends to share our time and our love.

This month, we are doing the newsletter a little differently.  We are splitting it to give you a newsletter now and a newsletter in a few weeks.  Each with a different purpose, but with some of the same elements.  It is our hope that by getting less information, but more frequent newsletters that you will be aware of what we are bringing our members every month.

The Humanist Canada newsletter is an important way for us to communicate with you. We'd like to see what you think of the idea.  Please complete this very quick and easy survey. Your opinions are important to us.

We hope you like it.

Winter

by Jill Fletcher-Douglas

Winter marks a time when the earth slides into a well-deserved rest. An inward shift in preparation for a period of eventual renewal. December 21st initiates the start of this revitalization by being the longest night of the year. It is not about the turkey or presents but a time to celebrate the importance of hope being returned as the darkness transitions back to light—an easily recognized sign of better times to come.

This year there are many circumstances globally that seem without hope, or more specifically, without that light I was referring to earlier. Wars are tearing apart countries, authoritarianism is gaining popularity, and many places worldwide suffer the consequences of the environment being horrendously mistreated. All unfortunate side effects of the rift dividing humankind when what is truly needed is a commitment to unity.

All of these examples bring along with their many questions. How can I support the environment? What actions can I take that will bring light to my family? From there, how can I spread it globally?

Those are just some of the many that could be asked. However, the most important to consider would be; where one could possibly start?

The members of Humanist Canada can stand together this winter by using the time given to rest, renew, and reflect. It is just the first step we can all collectively take towards finding a path to better support our communities and, from there, the environment. We all play a part, and by embracing our need for rest, we bring ourselves closer to being the hope and light the earth needs.

Humanist Canada continues to provide exceptional programming through courses, monthly webinars, members connect gatherings, and our Officiant and Chaplaincy Programs to name just a few. None of this would be possible without a dedicated staff, a host of members volunteering their time, and donations from members and supporters. If you didn't know, Humanist Canada is entirely supporter-funded.

While memberships are vital to our mission, memberships don't cover our operating costs. That's why your donation is critically essential to Humanist Canada. Your donations allow us to continue to bring you our programs and grow the voice of Humanism in Canada.

A few generous donors have pooled their money together and will match your donations -- dollar for dollar -- to a maximum of the pooled funds. Our goal is to raise $12,000 with this year-end campaign.

You'll be doing more than just donating. Your kindness will make many more programs possible. Please consider donating today or become a monthly donor and help us all year long.

We welcome your ideas for the newsletter, or your articles.
Please get in touch.
We look forward to hearing from you.
